Frequently Asked Questions About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Everything you and your family need to know about starting your Jiu-Jitsu journey at Lion Heart Jiu Jitsu.

Do I need experience to start?

Not at all. Most of our students started as complete beginners. Our introductory programs are designed specifically to build your foundation from the ground up in a supportive environment.

What should I wear for my first class?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing like a t-shirt and shorts or leggings. Avoid clothes with zippers, pockets, or buttons that could scratch your training partners or the mats.

Do I need to be in shape already?

Jiu-Jitsu will get you in shape! We encourage everyone to work at their own pace. As you train consistently, you'll naturally see improvements in your cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility.

Will I have to spar on my first day?

No pressure at all. You won't have to spar on day one. You can join in whenever you feel ready and your coach gives the green light. We make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable starting out.

Is Jiu-Jitsu safe for my child?

Safety is our absolute top priority. We teach proper techniques, partner respect, and controlled movements. Our instructors are highly experienced in ensuring a safe, structured, and fun environment.

Do I have to compete?

Competition is completely optional. While we support those who want to test their skills in tournaments, the majority of our students train for self-defense, fitness, and personal growth.

What happens during my first class?

You'll be introduced to the mats, shown basic movements, and partnered with an experienced student or instructor to guide you through fundamental techniques. It's welcoming and low-pressure.

What should I bring with me?

Always bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. If you have a Jiu-Jitsu Gi, bring it; otherwise, just arrive in your athletic wear. We have changing rooms and all necessary equipment here.

What measures ensure student safety?

We maintain high cleaning standards for our mats and equipment. Classes are always supervised by certified instructors who enforce 'tapping out' protocols and mutual respect.

At what age can children start training?

We typically welcome children starting as young as 5 or 6 years old. We consider each child individually and help them get started at a level where they can learn and have fun.

What is the academy's philosophy?

Lion Heart focuses on empowerment, discipline, and community. We believe Jiu-Jitsu is a tool for life that builds confidence and resilience both on and off the mats.
