One of the most common things we hear from people thinking about trying Jiu Jitsu is:

“I'm not in shape enough to do Jiu Jitsu.”

Our answer?

You don't need to be in shape to start.

Just Start Where You Are

You don't need to be strong, athletic, flexible, or have great cardio before you walk through the door.

I know this from experience.

When I started Jiu Jitsu, I was around 215 pounds and in pretty average shape. I wasn't walking into the academy in great condition, and I definitely wasn't an athlete.

I just started training. And over time, I got better at Jiu Jitsu, became more comfortable moving, and got into better shape along the way. I didn't need to get in shape first.

I just needed to start.

You Don't Have to Keep Up With Everyone

You'll train with people who have been doing Jiu Jitsu for years, people who started a few months ago, and people who are walking onto the mat for the first time.

You don't need to keep up with the person next to you.

Focus on getting a little better each time you train.

Jiu Jitsu Is a Workout

Yes, you'll get a workout. You'll move, drill techniques, grapple, and eventually do some live training. Your first few classes might be challenging. You might get tired faster than you expected or need to take a few breaks.

That's okay.

Your conditioning will improve as you continue to train.

What If I Haven't Worked Out in Years?

That's okay too. We'll show you the basics, pair you with someone who can help, and let you work at a pace that's appropriate for you. You don't have to prove anything on your first day.

Just show up.
